A 37-year-old woman died after choking in a marshmallow eating contest at Beddau RFC, an inquest has been told.
Natalie Buss had been onstage during the fundraising evening and collapsed and died shortly afterwards on Saturday, 7 October.
The coroner heard the contest involved fitting as many marshmallows in her mouth as possible.
A Pontypridd inquest was opened and adjourned to allow an investigation into the full circumstances.
Coroner Patricia Morgan was told that Ms Buss appeared to be choking and CPR was carried out until paramedics arrived, but she could not be revived and died at the scene.
A post mortem examination carried out at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, Llantrisant, Rhondda Cynon Taf, gave a provisional cause of death as “pending further investigation”.
Flowers have been laid at Beddau RFC following her death.
The club said that everyone associated with the club was devastated at “the loss of a lady who was a wonderful wife, mother and daughter” in what they say was “an absolutely tragic turn of events”.
South Wales Police have said it is investigating the circumstances of what happened.
There is also an investigation by Rhondda Cynon Taf council as the health and safety regulator.
The inquest was adjourned to allow investigations into the circumstances of Ms Buss’ death to be carried out.
Area coroner Patricia Morgan said: “I express my condolences to the family of Natalie Buss at this tragic time.”
