EU to send 160 million euros from frozen Russian assets to Ukraine
BRUSSELS (Reuters) -The sum of 160 million euros from the proceeds of frozen Russian assets will be allocated to meet Ukraine’s urgent humanitarian needs for this winter, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Thursday. Russia has knocked out about 9 gigawatts (GW) of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, which von der Leyen said was the “power equivalent of the three Baltic states”.

16 candidates to run in Don Valley West byelection
Voters will have a choice of 16 candidates in the Nov. 4 city council byelection in Don Valley West. The byelection was called to replace Coun. Jaye Robinson, who died on May 16 at the age of 61. Flood-hit central Europe will get billions in EU aid, von der Leyen promises
The European Union will make billions of euros available to help central Europe recover from severe floods, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Thursday, as she pledged support for regions that have been devastated by the deluge. The worst floods to hit central Europe in at least two decades have caused widespread damage from Romania to Poland, killing at least 24 people, destroying bridges, submerging cars and leaving towns caked in mud and debris. “I am here to reassure you that Europe stands by your side,” she told a news conference in the Polish city of Wroclaw, standing alongside leaders of the affected countries.

British Columbia’s police oversight agency says it is investigating after the RCMP fatally shot a woman in Surrey early Thursday.Police said in a news release that the Surrey RCMP received a report of a disturbance at a home in the 6200 block of 180A Street at around 4:40 a.m.According to RCMP, officers learned that the woman was reportedly holding a weapon near a toddler who she had locked herself in a room with. Republicans in North Carolina and nationally are assessing the potential fallout for former President Donald Trump from a bombshell report alleging that Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson, the party’s gubernatorial nominee, posted disturbing and inflammatory statements on a forum of a pornographic website. CNN reported Thursday that Robinson, behind an anonymous username he allegedly used elsewhere, made the comments more than a decade ago, including supporting slavery, calling himself a “black NAZI” and recalling memories of him “peeping” on women in the shower as a 14-year-old.
