Traffic delays of three hours after M25 lorry fire
Traffic is being delayed by about three hours on a section of the M25 after a “serious” lorry fire resulted in 11 miles (17.1km) of congestion, National Highways says.
On Friday morning, National Highways said two lanes on the clockwise carriageway between junction five, near Sevenoaks in Kent, and junction six, near Godstone in Surrey, had been closed.
Surrey Police said it was made aware of the incident at about 01:30 and Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said it left the scene at about 03:15 as the blaze had been extinguished.
Traffic monitoring site Inrix said two lanes were still closed as of 11:38, despite one being briefly reopened, but “severe delays” remained.
National Highways said the lorry’s load had been removed and clean up work could begin as the vehicle had been lifted onto a recovery van.
Inrix explained that congestion had spread to the A25 through Sundridge, Oxted and Godstone.
Delays of about 55 minutes are also affecting traffic travelling westbound on the M26 leading up to the M25 at junction five.
National Highways said resurfacing work was required and would be completed overnight, although the road was unlikely to be fully closed.
All lanes will be open throughout the day once recovery work has been completed, according to National Highways.
Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said it attended the incident along with Kent Fire and Rescue Service and there were no casualties.
