The €400 million cut being sought by governments from the proposed €12.7 billion 2025 budget of the EU’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme is “incomprehensible”, according to Christian Ehler, the European Parliament research committee’s lead on the file. He warned: “These proposed cuts will not only do serious long-term damage to Europe’s R&I capacity, they also undermine the credibility of the union’s research policy ambitions, may contribute to brain drain of leading European researchers and will slow down the EU in the global race for scientific and technological leadership.” The Parliament and governments will aim to negotiate a compromise later this year.
