A plan to eradicate swine fever in Italy. But also sanctions for companies that exploit workers and food sovereignty that lands in Europe. The Minister of Agriculture Francesco Lollobrigida, interviewed by “La Stampa” claims the results obtained in these 23 months of government. And he looks with optimism at the end of the legislature: “I don’t see any fibrillation in the government”. He returned from the G7 of Agriculture in Ortigia and the assessment is “very positive, for the first time we managed to put the definition ‘food sovereignty’ in the final document. We involved hundreds of young people with debates and conferences. Another unprecedented fact: it was not a closed G7, but open to all”. At Terra Madre, in Turin, he met the founder of Slow Food Carlo Petrini: “I call him a professor even though he tells me he is a gastronome. But I prefer to call someone who teaches something a professor. We start from very distant positions, but we have great points of contact. When I spoke for the first time about food sovereignty, there was a barrage of criticism from the left, Petrini said that it was a cultural concept to refer to in order to defend the freedom of people to produce food and feed themselves. Today – adds the minister – that theme is on the European agenda: Von der Leyen says that the EU must achieve food sovereignty. In this, Italy is a vanguard”.
There is great alarm over swine fever in Piedmont and Lombardy. Some farmers accuse the government of having acted late: “It is not like that, unfortunately we are facing a pandemic. Swine fever is found in every part of Asia and Europe, it is the biggest problem we are facing together with ‘blue tongue’. We have appointed a new commissioner, John Filippini, which has already presented a plan. There is good news: these days there is a relaxation of the measures, with the possibility of transferring some pigs from the farms to avoid contagion and economic damage”. Chapter education. The Made in Italy high school has been a flop so far: “Young people must be able to choose the best path to find work, unfortunately we have addresses that do not facilitate the employment of young people. I studied classical studies and I will never deny it, but I say that it is not mandatory to attend a high school to be successful in life. However, we cannot evaluate the Made in Italy high school in its first year of experimentation”, concludes Lollobrigida.
