Malaysian social media is abuzz with speculation, condemnation and empathy over the unusual antics of two sisters – one of whom posted photos of her licking dough at a soft pretzel chain – as their actions mystify and divide the public.
Last Wednesday, the Auntie Anne’s pretzel chain in Malaysia was forced to shut down an outlet at a mall in Kuala Lumpur after a public outcry over the conduct of employee Alice Chang, who went viral after posting an 18-second video of her inappropriately handling a lump of dough at the outlet, including kissing it.
Chang, who was “immediately terminated”, was then spotted by the public at Cold Stone Creamery, an ice cream parlour at an upscale mall in the popular Bukit Bintang shopping district, prompting its management to swiftly distance the chain from her over the weekend.
“We did not hire her, and she did not have access to the food,” the ice cream parlour said, adding that she had hidden her identity when applying for a part-time job.
“As part of our proactive measure, we have thoroughly cleaned the outlet.”
Malaysian Reddit users reacted with amusement over the restaurant’s decision to issue a statement, saying it had “scrubbed clean” its premises just because Chang was there.
