After two decades of searching for answers, a Fort Myers cold case involving a murder and drug trafficking was resolved.Rodney Terrell Davis, 41, was sentenced to 40 years in prison for second-degree murder with a firearm for a 2004 murder. Davis was also sentenced to 15 years in prison on drug trafficking charges.Davis was arrested in 2022 as a result of a NETFORCE investigation. Reports say the Cape Coral man was caught arranging narcotics trafficking deals from the lee County Jail, where he was being held on separate charges.During the investigation, Davis reportedly agreed to share information with law enforcement on his involvement with the homicide that occurred on June 12, 2004.Reports say Davis admitted to shooting Cory Smith in front of a home on Royal Palm Avenue Fort Myers. NBC2 spoke with Smith’s niece who told the judge what this sentencing means to her family.”I cherish every moment we spent together. His murder was a devastating blow, not just because of the pain and grief it caused, but also because it robbed me of the opportunity to see the man who I knew who he could become. I never got to see him achieve his dreams, never got to experience his guidance and support,” Javaria Brown said.According to reports, Davis’ sentence will run concurrent with the sentence he is currently serving for a 2019 crime.
