The “God of War” TV series adaptation at Amazon has found its new showrunner.
Variety has confirmed that Ronald D. Moore has boarded the show as writer, showrunner, and executive producer. Moore joins the series shortly after it was reported that original showrunner Rafe Judkins had exited.
Judkins left “God of War” along with executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus. They had reportedly completed multiple scripts for the series but Amazon and fellow studio Sony Pictures Television decided to go in a different creative direction.
Moore recently returned to the Sony Pictures Television fold with a new overall deal after having departed the independent studio for a deal with Disney and 20th Television. He had previously been with Sony for roughly a decade, during which time he produced hit shows like “Outlander” and “For All Mankind.” An “Outlander” prequel series and a “For All Mankind” spinoff are currently in the works.

Moore is also known for his work in the “Star Trek” franchise, working on shows like “Next Generation,” “Voyager,” and “Deep Space Nine,” as well as writing the films “Star Trek: Generations” and “Star Trek: First Contact.” He is perhaps best known for his reboot of “Battlestar Galactica,” which ran for four seasons on Syfy (then Sci-Fi Channel) and also spawned two TV movies, wrapping up in 2009. A prequel series, “Caprica,” aired on Syfy for one season in 2010.
He is repped by CAA and Hansen Jacobson.
Santa Monica Studio’s studio creative director Cory Barlog remains onboard “God of War” as an executive producer, as do Playstation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Hermen Hulst, and Vertigo’s Roy Lee. Santa Monica Studio’s Jeff Ketcham is a co-executive producer. The show was originally ordered to series at Amazon Prime Video in 2022.
Based on the massively popular 2018 video game developed by Santa Monica Studio, the show follows Kratos, the God of War, who, “after exiling himself from his blood-soaked past in ancient Greece, hangs up his weapons forever in the Norse realm of Midgard, per Amazon’s description. “When his beloved wife dies, Kratos sets off on a dangerous journey with his estranged son Atreus to spread her ashes from the highest peak — his wife’s final wish. Kratos soon realizes the journey is an epic quest in disguise, one which will test the bonds between father and son, and force Kratos to battle new gods and monsters for the fate of the world.”
Deadline first reported Moore joining the series.
