ROYAL OAK, MI – A Michigan doctor is accused of taking part in a multi-million-dollar scheme to illegally sell and divert expensive prescription cancer drugs.
Dr. Naveed Aslam, 51, of West Bloomfield has been charged with conspiracy to illegally sell or trade prescription drugs and 10 counts of illegally selling or trading prescription drugs, United States Attorney Dawn N. Ison announced.
Dr. Aslam’s involvement in the scheme allegedly took place between 2019 and 2023 during which he worked with others to buy and sell expensive cancer drugs for profit with the intent to defraud and mislead.
Aslam is accused of using his access through his medical practice, Somerset Hematology and Oncology, P.C., to order and purchase the cancer drugs, which he would then sell to his accomplices to pass on to customers.
Dr. Aslam allegedly acquired and sold more than $17 million in prescription cancer drugs, and personally profited more than $2.5 million.
“The safety and integrity of our country’s prescription drug supply lines – particularly for cancer drugs – is an important part of our health care system,” Ison said in a statement.
“As alleged, Dr. Aslam used his role as a physician to violate that integrity and divert prescription cancer drugs away from treating patients. My office is committed to prosecuting medical professionals who seek to profit, rather than protect, our health care system.”
Cheyvoryea Gibson, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Michigan said Aslam’s alleged participation in the scheme is an “inexcusable” breach of trust, especially considering the “critical nature of the drugs involved.”
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Andrew J. Lievense.
