The European Film Festival opened Saturday in Tripoli, Libya, featuring films from six countries, including Libya, and promoting cultural collaboration between Libya and Europe. The six-day event, organized by the European Union (EU) Delegation to Libya and Libya’s General Authority for Cinema, Theater, and Arts, includes contributions from Spain, Italy, Malta, France, Germany, and Libya.
Nicola Orlando, the EU ambassador to Libya, expressed optimism about the festival’s potential to strengthen cultural ties. “This is a unique opportunity to celebrate and promote Libya’s rich cultural heritage and vibrant contemporary activity,” he said. Orlando added his hope that the festival would inspire future generations and foster mutual understanding between Libya and European countries.

Abdul Basset Abu Ginda, head of Libya’s General Authority for Cinema, Theater, and Arts, called the festival a step toward deeper cooperation with the EU. Speaking at the opening, he emphasized the need for cultural initiatives that promote peace and human rights. “We also hope for more cooperation in the field of technical training and harnessing arts to serve children and families,” he said.
The festival unfolds during Libya’s ongoing political stalemate, with the nation divided between rival governments in the east and west. Despite these challenges, organizers see the event as a way to strengthen cultural bridges and inspire unity.
