Anger over comments made by Tory peer Lord David Frost is the lead story in the Daily Record this Friday morning. Lord Frost, who was the chief Brexit negotiator, suggested to a newspaper it was “time to reverse” devolution. He claimed Holyrood should be stripped of some of its powers, and the paper reports that “even Tory MSPs were shocked” by the remarks. The headline reads “control freaks”.
The National leads with the same story, reporting that Lord Frost suggested that the SNP’s “implosion” was a chance to put devolution into reverse. The front page also pictures the first images of new Scots Dr Who Ncuti Gatwa.
“Home aloan” is the Scottish Sun’s play on words after it emerged on Thursday that the SNP still owes former chief executive Peter Murrell money after he gave it a £108,000 advance in 2021. The splash features an image of Mr Murrell seen leaving his house for the first time since his arrest by police. He was released without charge pending further inquiries.
The SNP is still the main topic on the front of the Scottish Daily Mail, which asks: Why does SNP still owe thousands to Sturgeon’s husband?” It reports that Humza Yousaf has “refused to say” if the SNP can afford to repay money it owes to Peter Murrell but that he said the party was not facing bankruptcy.
A new poll showing Labour gaining support in Scotland leads The Times. The paper’s top line says Humza Yousaf is viewed as “incompetent, weak and out of touch” by Scottish voters. It says that despite Mr Yousaf’s efforts to reset the agenda, the public think he is doing “a bad job”.
The Scotsman is one of several papers reporting on the Scottish government’s deposit return scheme after Circular Economy Minister Lorna Slater announced a delay to the scheme’s launch. The paper claims Ms Slater has shifted blame for the delay to the UK Government.
Ms Slater is pictured on the front of the Scottish Daily Express with the headline “stop trying to spin the bottles”. The article claims she has been “forced to rewrite” the deposit return scheme.
The conclusion of a report into bullying allegations against Deputy PM and Justice Secretary Dominic Raab is another top story. The i headline declares “Deputy PM Raab refuses to resign” and says he is confident the official inquiry shows he has not breached the ministerial code. It reports that civil servants who made the claims are angry at the delay and anxious that he may continue in post.
The Daily Telegraph reports that Mr Raab will “fight to the death” to keep his cabinet job. The paper says a delay in a decision from Rishi Sunak on whether the MP will keep his job suggested there were “grey areas” and the report was not “cut and dried”.
The Herald’s lead story says environmentalists are threatening to cripple Scotland’s vital fuel supplies in the coming months in protest at the expansion of the North Sea oil and gas industry. The campaign group This is Rigged tells the paper it plans to “shut down the fossil fuel industry”. The front page also prints an image of Peter Murrell from Thursday.
“Elon… we have a problem” is the headline on the front of the Metro as it details the explosion of Elon Musk’s SpaceX rocket shortly after blast-off. The paper says Mr Musk described the launch as a success, despite his rocket blowing apart just four minutes after lift-off.
An independent award-winning brewery which has operated in South Queensferry for more than 170 years has been forced to close, reports the Edinburgh Evening News. The Ferry Brewery, which opened in 1851, will close its doors for the final time this weekend due to rising energy prices, the economic downturn and the cost of living crisis.
The Courier reports on 22 job losses at Dundee flight school Tayside Aviation as it enters administration. It also reveals that in the same day, 50 jobs were saved at textile firm Bonar Yarns while Dundee and Angus College announced the loss of 32 posts.
The P&J leads with a £12m “vision” for Aberdeen’s beach boulevard and says the future of a new football stadium for Aberdeen may now be in doubt. It says an ongoing row over funding means the site is described as a “potential new stadium” in updated blueprints.
