Ahead of the first anniversary of October 7, I asked nine Haaretz journalists if they would talk to me about that day and the seemingly perpetual war that followed. I knew that to share these memories is to ache, and that the vulnerability required for the task might be too great a price to pay for an article. Some were reticent about centering their own experiences after yearslong careers of taking themselves out of the story. Some felt that their own role was too small or insignificant to merit coverage. But in the end, all of them agreed to speak.
