One person has died in a mudslide on the edge of the North York Moors National Park, police said.
The mudslide happened at Carlton-in-Cleveland at around 13:15 BST, with emergency services still on scene.
North Yorkshire Police asked the public to avoid the area, which has been cordoned off, while work continued.
Officers said nobody else was hurt and they would provide updates “as soon as we can”. The incident is believed to have happened on Carlton Bank.
A spokesperson said: “We would ask the public to refrain from speculation and spreading unverified information.”
BBC Yorkshire climate correspondent Paul Hudson said the area, which was covered by a Met Office yellow weather warning, had seen a month’s worth of rain in 12 hours on Wednesday.
Mr Hudson said Loftus, around 20 miles away, had recorded 42mm since 07:00.
“This is more than the average for the whole month of May, which is 41mm.
“It is likely that some sites, especially on the moors will have had more.”
Carlton Bank is in the Cleveland Hills and overlooks the villages of Carlton-in-Cleveland and Faceby.
Local councillor David Hugill told the BBC he was “gobsmacked” by the news and would be heading to the area.
