Many of Tuesday’s newspapers continue to report on the attacks on Israel by the militant group Hamas. The i newspaper leads with reports that Israel is preparing a ground invasion as the armed wing of Hamas “threatens public execution of Israeli hostages”. The paper says over 300,000 Israeli army reservists were called up as the country’s prime minister reportedly told US President Joe Biden that he would launch a ground invasion “amid fears of high casualties”.
The Daily Telegraph reports on a televised address from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who pledged to “crush” Hamas as he compared the group to the Islamic State group. The paper quotes Netanyahu as saying “the atrocities committed by Hamas have not been seen since Isis [Islamic State] atrocities”.
Mr Netanyahu has said the siege on Gaza is “only the beginning” of retaliation against Hamas, reports The Scotsman.
The Scottish Daily Mail has more quotes from Israel’s prime minister who reportedly told Joe Biden: “We have to go in, we can’t negotiate now. We need to restore deterrence.”
The Scottsih Daily Express reports that Israel is preparing to unleash “truly terrifying” revenge strikes on Hamas who “massacred nearly 1,000 of its civilians and soldiers”. The paper shows the same images of children caught up in the conflict.
The Times reports that Hamas has threatened to murder a hostage for “every unannounced Israeli strike on Gaza” and to publish a “recording of each execution”. The paper quotes the spokesman for the al-Qassam Brigades – its armed wing – who uses the nom de guerre Abu Obeida. The paper says Obeida issued the threat in response to intense air raids on the strip and an Israeli decision to cut it off from water, electricity, food and other supplies.
The Scottish Sun highlights that First Minister Humza Yousaf’s in-laws are trapped in Gaza, which the paper calls “hell on earth”. The paper also pictures a grandfather who was confirmed as the first Scottish victim of the Hamas assault on Israel.
The Metro carries a similar headline, picturing rubble after an Israeli air strike at a refugee camp in Gaza. The paper also highlights Mr Yousaf’s family situation after he said no one could guarantee his in-laws safe passage.
Mr Yousaf’s wife’s parents, who live in Dundee, travelled to Gaza to see her father’s sick mother, the Daily Record reports. The Israelis have told them to leave, but Mr Yousaf said they had no way to get out and the UK Foreign Office could not guarantee safe passage.
The National reports Mr Yousaf saying he “cannot sleep” for worry about his family trapped in Gaza as he called for innocent civilians to be given safe passage out of the war-torn area.
The Herald leads on tributes to Bernard Cowan, who grew up in Glasgow and settled in Israel where he lived with his wife and three children. The paper says Mr Cowan is among more than 10 British citizens feared dead, or missing.
The Glasgow Times leads on a man who raped a teenage girl at the shop where he worked. The paper says he out a similar attack on another young victim in his car.
The Press and Journal warns of further heavy rain across “deluged communities”, saying the north of Scotland remains on “high alert” after flooding over the weekend.
Dundee’s Evening Telegraph leads on a man who has been jailed for five years for raping a 15-year-old girl.
The Evening Express leads on the “sudden departure” of a headteacher at a low-scoring high school in Aberdeen.
The Courier headlines on plans by pop star Justin Timberlake and golfing legend Tiger Woods to open a gastro pub in a cinema in St Andrews.
And the Edinburgh Evening News asks whether residents have had enough of speed limits being lowered to 20mph.
