Europe is “losing ground in many fields” of research and must “turn the tide”, the president of the European Commission has warned. Ursula von der Leyen expressed her concern in a speech at an event to mark the 70th anniversary of Cern, Europe’s nuclear research organisation, opening with a sober tone despite the celebratory nature of the occasion. Europe’s global share of patent applications has halved to 15 per cent in the past 20 years, she said, amid rising global competition. “And while Europe is home to more researchers than both the United States and China, we are losing ground in many fields…It is time to turn the tide again, just like the Cern founders did 70 years ago,” she said.
